It was late winter when I first saw her. There was a congregation of magpies and crows jousting for position on and around the carcass of some unfortunate creature in the middle of a field. While I was watching, a bald eagle made a low pass and then came around into the wind and lit right next to the carcass. All the other birds complained but gave way and I was very impressed at the regal bearing of the eagle. But suddenly, all the birds, including the eagle, took off. Then I saw her, flying very low over the ground. She made one quick turn and landed right on top of the feast all by herself. The other scavengers returned quickly, but the grand nature of her entrance left no doubt who the supreme bird was.
