The frost lay heavy on the stubble in the bright light of the morning. The dog's panting breath steams as she stares, as if frozen, at a spot a few yards ahead. She creeps forward and suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, the explosive staccato of wings beating the air and coarse cackling as 2 roosters launch themselves and accelerate above the field.
